Jean-Michel Basquiat unseen collection to be viewed at Art Basel Miami 2016

A boy was born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn. Though, this was not your average boy. His life would be filled with challenges, and struggles. His mother, Puerto Rican, and father, Haitian, could never know just how amazing, and inspiring their son would become. Even throughout his life, his father, who had raised him, had such high aspirations and hopes for his son. Jean-Michel Basquiat would grow to do things that would shake the art world, and open our eyes to unbelievable beauty, and truth.

Through all of this beauty, pain would ultimately take one if the greatest artists of our time at the early age of 27. After the death of Andy Warhol, Basquiat’s depression became more severe. The two had become very close friends over the years. We at DRKMTTR believe this was one of the most iconic, influential, powerful, and moving relationships. On August 12, 1988 Basquiat died of a heroin overdose at his art studio on Great Jones Street in Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood. He had become more isolated, and felt alone. Despite his passing, his art would continues to inspire people to this day.

In September 2017, the Barbican Centre in the U.K. will host its first major Basquiat exhibit. After this announcement, we have learned that a collection of works by Basquiat, that has never been shown, will be on display at Miami’s Art Basel in 2016. The work will be on display at X Contemporary, a satellite event.

This collection will be hosted by Brooklyn’s Bishop Gallery. The work shown will range from paintings, drawings, and collages created by Basquiat between 1979 and 1981. The display can be found at a close friend’s, Lonny Lichtenberg, New York aparapartment.

Al Diaz, who collaborated with Basquiat in his SAMO, much-mythologized, graffiti days, will be curating the event.

This show will be available to view through November 30th to December 4th, at the Job I Hotel in Miami.
